Volunteer Fire Department
The volunteer fire department holds
an annual fundraiser with proceeds going to serve families in Arcadia
and the surrounding communities. Equipment purchased in the last couple
of years include: bunker gear, chain saw, spades, shovels, tanker, etc.
The fire department has items such as hospital beds, commode, portable
oxygen unit, wheelchair, bed pans, walker, and crutches which can be checked
out from any fireman. In an emergency, dial 911.
The volunteer rescue unit utilizes
membership fees to help maintain and supply the unit. Funds have been
used to purchase such items as a laryngoscope kit, oxygen bears for children,
and continuing education programs. In 2001, a new ambulance was purchase
through donations and grants. In an emergency, dial 911.
Library
The Arcadia Township Library, which
celebrated its 85th birthday in October 2002, began plans of existence
on March 16, 1916, when the first five member library board was organized.
Mrs. N.A. Lewin, secretary, deserves much credit for her determination
and efforts to locate the library in Arcadia and her correspondence with
the Carnegie Foundation. The cornerstone laying was on March 24, 1917,
and the library opened October 2 of that same year.
A group of interested citizens purchased the building
site, which originally housed an old yellow livery stable, and erected
and furnished it at a cost of $8,000. Funds from the Carnegie Foundation
paid for the building while various organizations, firms, and individuals
funded the fixtures and furniture. Most of the original furnishings are
still in use and in excellent condition. The library has been maintained
in beautiful condition over the years and recent improvements have made
it even better.
The library has served the community not only with reading
materials, but has provided a meeting place for organizations and citizens.
A reading program is also available during the summer months. For more
information, call (308) 789-6346.
Newspaper
The Arcadia Guide is published every
first and third Wednesdays of the month. Editors are Bonnie
Fernau and Amber Veskerna. For
more information, call (308) 789-6658.
